know what youre getting
i have purchased around 40 of these drives over the last 6-8 years or so for different setups. they are decent drives... operate well, fairly quick for spinning platter drives. however - they are not the most stable.in my recent order of 4 drives to fill out a raid array, 1 was completely DOA.the drives ive purchased over the last 2 years... about 80% of them are still running.so... its a cheap drive... if you get a good one, it should be ok for several years. if not, it will either be dead on arrival, or within a year.UPDATE: so the last one i installed started having issues. i checked the smart status on the drive, and it showed THOUSANDS of hours of powered on - this is obviously either flat out used, or refurb being sold as new. that made me stop and check the others - they are questionable, but nowhere near this bad.

BEWARE: Used drives
My drive was sold by "AMS TECHNOLOGIES, INC." The drive had 24,000 hours on it! It looks like it was used in a NAS application given the high hour count and low stop_start count.ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x000f 119 099 006 Pre-fail Always - 228799432 3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0003 092 091 000 Pre-fail Always - 0 4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 020 Old_age Always - 11 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 010 Pre-fail Always - 0 7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x000f 088 060 030 Pre-fail Always - 703949704 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 072 072 000 Old_age Always - 25129 10 Spin_Retry_Count 0x0013 100 100 097 Pre-fail Always - 0 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 020 Old_age Always - 11183 Runtime_Bad_Block 0x0032 099 099 000 Old_age Always - 1184 End-to-End_Error 0x0032 100 100 099 Old_age Always - 0187 Reported_Uncorrect 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0188 Command_Timeout 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 0 0189 High_Fly_Writes 0x003a 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 121190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 078 051 045 Old_age Always - 22 (Min/Max 20/23)191 G-Sense_Error_Rate 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 10193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1932194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 022 049 000 Old_age Always - 22 (0 18 0 0 0)197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 0199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x003e 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0240 Head_Flying_Hours 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 24537h+00m+37.681s241 Total_LBAs_Written 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 1349256320805242 Total_LBAs_Read 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 1817955541626

Beware. These drives are used, with over 5 years of use.
I received this drive in what appeared to be a new sealed package, however upon powering up the drive and checking the SMART data the drive reported 45,979 hours of operation or a little over 5 years. Also it already had 20 billion writes and 83 billion reads. (yes that billion with a "b"). Despite the high numbers the drive had only been power cycled 27 times so this appears to be a drive that was "reclaimed" from a data center and is now being sold as new. They maybe cheap but they've already been run to just about the edge of their life. Buyer be ware!

Failed in Four Years
I bought this drive, the Seagate 3TB Desktop HDD SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive (ST3000DM001) in 2014 and installed it in my mid-2010 iMac. It worked fine until sometime later in 2018 when I noticed the iMac would not boot properly and programs were sluggish. I thought the problem was aging hardware not properly running newer software. But eventually it just stopped booting altogether. I tried various diagnostic tools, to no avail. I bought a replacement iMac, then after a few months getting tired of seeing my old iMac sitting there dead on my desk, I replaced the HD and bought a thermal kit from OWC. After installing the OS (High Sierra) and restoring some user documents from an old backup, the mid-2010 iMac works great. Not pleased that the Seagate Barracuda didn't last longer.

Many died within 7 years
I have purchased about 14 of these drives, and over the past 7 years, about 7 died. That's about a 50% failure rate after 5 years. If I remember correctly, 2 of them failed right after 2 years, barely missing the warranty period by a few months. They had worked reliably and quietly, although they had been running quite hot (that's normal) in my two NAS devices.I have purchased replacements with model ST3000DM008

Does not last long!
So I ordered this product in 2013 for a PC and have been using it with no problems, until about a year ago. A year ago, I started getting blue screens and freezes, where after I restarted, my 'E' drive would be gone. So now after testing my (working fine) RAM and going through every driver and software option related to these issues, I diagnosed it to my HDD. I have a Crucial SSD that I have really important things on so it wasn't that and everything pointed to my hard drive. So now, after less than 3 years of use, my hard drive is causing me unbearable issues. A replacement would be great but I don't want to have to replace my hard drive every 3 or so years. Would not recommend this hard drive and frankly, none of Seagate's products, after this experience. And as of May 2017, the hard drive is dead and will not show up/

Product ID not Clear
Seagate ST1000DM003 3.5 inch 1TB Barracuda Hard DriveSeagate Barracuda 1TBThis item I returned straight away for the following reasons:1. The item label on the {HDD} the name BARRACUDA is not written- just saySeagate 1TB HDD.2. There was no document/leaflet enclosed by the manufacturer to say what it is orTo assure quality of the product.3. Nothing about the Guarantee because Seagate products usually register on line with them.4. I have included 2 photos of a Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD below [which I want to replace]5. There is a Seagate HDD -BARRACUDA with a Green label anewer version. Had I seen that I would have purchased it6. Attached below is the Seagate’s official response after I kept on inquiring about these anomalies:The first two photos are the HDD that I want to replace and 3rd is the the one advertised and returned

so I wouldn't let the bad reviews put you off too much
I bought this for my sisters PC. It was one of the cheapest at the time, which influenced my decision. The drive is very typical of most other drives you'd find from any other company. Many people claim that Seagate drives have low reliability, however, for every story you hear about this company, there is another very similar story for every other manufacturer out there, so I wouldn't let the bad reviews put you off too much. If you're wanting reliability, you should probably look into a backup solution like a NAS, a cloud service or RAID.I have actually had a Seagate drive fail on me, however, it was being abused for eight years, so you can expect it to die at some point.

Brand new ordered. REFURBISHED delivered.
Seagate ST1000DM003 3.5 inch 1TB Barracuda Hard Drive I'll precurse this by stating that my order was fulfilled by Eureka! Ltd.The issue here was that I ordered a brand new drive and instead received a refurbished one. Even if it had worked as well as my other drives of the same type, it would be returned on principle. There's logic to this too, for those who aren't as stubborn as myself: since the drive has been used before (evident since it has been refurbished), it's lifespan would be decreased; and to top it off, when tested, the drive had a notable amount of sectors reallocated and consequently did not align with the advertised capacity.FYI, I ordered the Seagate Barracuda, 1TB.Item is being returned at no cost; which is now the most positive thing to come out of ordering from Eureka! Ltd. Will update with more info, should anything worth noting come out of this. Seagate ST1000DM003 3.5 inch 1TB Barracuda Hard Drive

Beinahe Brand verursacht
So etwas darf niemals erst passieren!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Storage.
Very good for storing huge amounts of data that I don't use a lot, such as backups, films, photos, game origins etc.I keep it out of my PC and I use a long pair of SATA cables that I can pull out of one of the empty DVD caves, then attach the drive, with power off (!) when I need to add some more data or access existing data. This method is obviously faster than using an external USB enclosure, but one needs to be careful as the SATA cables are "live" - one for data, one for power. I keep these cables coiled up in a non-static bag, tucked in the DVD cave at the front of the PC.
