A great story of secrets, deceit and power
I truly loved this story though I feel it's more of an Ava Gardner film then a Robert Mitchum film but that's ok. The story has an interesting story of a young woman controlled by her grandmother and uncle. A woman who wants to escape their grasp. She falls in love with Robert Mitchum character who is on his way to becoming a doctor and they scheme to get on a boat and never look back. Does that plan happen? Watch the movie and find out, you won't be disappointed.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!
The niece (Ava Gardner) of an aristocratic but impoverished old New Orleans family falls in love with a penniless research scientist (Robert Mitchum). But when he returns from South America with a new bride (Janis Carter), she uses her recently acquired inheritance in her plans for revenge. Directed by Robert Stevenson (MARY POPPINS) from the novel CARRIAGE TRADE by Polan Banks, this is an old fashioned "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" melodrama and quite entertaining, too. Though the rough around the edges Mitchum is questionable casting as a bookish research scientist, the fetching Gardner is at the height of her beauty and one could be content basking in her exquisite close ups. The acting honors are stolen by Melvyn Douglas as Gardner's wily, unctuous and conscienceless cousin who ruins everything. He's positively slimy and it's a breath of relief when he gets his just desserts. The expert art and set direction recreates late 19th century New Orleans milieu with adroit dexterity and lovingly shot by Harry J. Wild (GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES). With Lucile Watson, Gordon Oliver and Clarence Muse. The Odeon Entertainment DVD via Great Britain is a handsome B&W transfer in the appropriate 1.33 aspect ratio.

Glorious tosh!
When I was a child in the 1960's "My Forbidden past" was one of the few cinema feature films to regularly turn up on a Sunday afternoon as the "Film Matinee" on BBC TV.I can't recall seeing it since those days, but it's a pleasure to view now. Expertly edited to just over seventy minutes, the plot zips along splendidly. It's a melodrama of the old fashioned school, with Ava Gardner as the jilted lover of Robert Mitchum who sets out to seek revenge on him. Ava is certainly at her most passionate here, and Mr Mitchum more than ever in his very laid back acting style. You can almost see in his face the obvious contempt he had for the lines he has to utter! This is a real 1950's "programmer", originally designed to be one half of a double-bill programme. It is most attractively designed with lavish sets and plenty of costume changes for Ava (in spite of her emotional crisis!!).As for the transfer, it's a nice crisp print with good audio and video quality. If you like these type of romances, you couldn't do better than this.

Good film, broken case.
The film was great, I'm a huge fan of films made in the 40s and this was a good one. I was however worried before I watched it as the case was broken inside and I could hear the film moving around inside so I was hoping it wasn't going to be scratched. Luckily the film was fine but I will now have to try and find a replacement case.
