If the budget box of Haydn operas ever makes it to the US, grab it. Haydn's operas are hidden masterpieces, the equal of the later Mozart operas in all but quality of libretto. This is one of the best, both in story and music, and is generally very will performed. Only Zoghby disappoints a little with some slightly under the mark pitching on soft, sustained notes.Don't let that stop you. Get this, and the others, whenever they show up.

This opera aptly portrays the full panorama of Haydn's musical moods - humour, warmth, and sheer drama. The duets and arias are most poignant.
