Q: approximately how big are the individual planets?

The biggest planet, Jupiter, is about 5.5" in diameter. The rings of Saturn are roughly 7" in diameter. And the smallest, Pluto, is 1.5". The Sun, however, is 7.5" in diameter.

Q: I'm confused about the dimensions? Can somebody clarify?

This exact solar system is hanging in my son's playroom. It's approximately 4 ft from end to end. The planets hang down at different levels. My husband hung it in the middle of the room which is about to change because 2 or 3 kids and balls, legos, etc. Not a good idea, it's about to be moved in a corner above a set of short lockers. It's definitely a conversation starter at a great price. Also you can hang it as low to the floor or as high to ceiling that you desire. We just wrapped the clear string that was left over around the nail we hung it with or you can cut it. Also it is constantly slowly turning with the air flow which makes it even more interesting. Just make sure you measure the available space. My son’s room has a ceiling fan and I was able to hang it in the corner. Also, you can adjust the height at which it hangs to prevent it from interfering with the ceiling fan.
