Flood of Fire: Ibis Trilogy Book 3

This is the last book in a Trilogy and, in some respects, my favourite of the three in the way the author injected humour into some of the characters. I knew nothing about the Opium Wars and it seems much of the book is based on eye witness accounts and real transcripts of events that occurred at that time so, it is fascinating. Loved the characters, in fact just thoroughly enjoyed getting immersed in the whole series. There is history, comedy, plant history, a few battles (didn't enjoy those bits so much), romance, intrigue, a brilliant read - once you get past the first couple of chapters. Love Amtav Ghosh, he is a wonderful author and observer of human traits. Plus I loved the fact that I could follow the characters through the three books.

The book is the third part of Gosh's triology on the first opium war and its social and political impact in India and China. The work is a historical research embedded in a novel (or maybe a novel embedded in an historical research). There is few mention of the opium war in Western literature and historical productions and that makes this trilogy even more important. A must-read

ペーパーバック: 624ページ出版社: John Murray Publishers Ltd (2015/5/28)ISBN-13: 978-0719569012　のレビュー　堂々の完結編である。四人の視点人物の物語が並行して語られる。 Kesri Singh;　東インド会社のセポイ兵。生い立ちから入隊、昇進、軍隊生活が描かれる。そしてカルカッタから広州への派遣軍に志願するのだが… Zachary Reid;　1巻からの続き。一難去ってまた一難、さまざまな厄介事に巻き込まれる。　Mrs Burnham,Mr Burnham, と複雑な関係が発生する。 Shireen Modi;　2巻からの続き。ボンペイのゾロアスター教徒の商人の妻。ほとんど幽閉されたように暮らす女性であったが…。Neel;　第2巻と同様、広州で清朝側の情報収集に協力する。他の登場人物が知り得ない歴史背景を読者に知らせる。　このように紹介すると、第1巻を読んだ方は、あの後の登場人物がどうなっているのか気になるであろう。御安心ください。第1巻の主要人物は全員登場します。後半、すべての人物が複雑にからみあい、ドラマが進行していく。難を言えば、後半、話が駆け足気味になってしまっていることぐらい。　第1巻の初めは大変難儀な文章であったが、3巻までくると慣れてくる。シリアスな人物、コミカルな人物もわかっているし、使われる言葉や口調も慣れてきているので楽に読めた。速く読むのがもったいないくらいである。　小説としての完成度をまじめに評価すると、やはり第1巻Sea of Poppiesが最高。しかし、あれを楽しめた人はこの最終巻も文句なく楽しめるでしょう。未読の方への情報としては、この巻だけ読むのは不可能です。第1巻から読まないと、さっぱりわかりません。
