Q: how long do they last can give overnight protection

I put a pad under my husband every night. It depends on how much he pees during the night, but he does sleep about 12 hours during the night. I do get him up at 9 PM and let him go potty, then if he sleeps the rest of the night until 5 to 7 in the morning he will have wet the pad some or the pad could be soaked. depends. All in all I am please with Depends.

Q: Is there an absorbant layer in the back as well as the front?

The absorbent layer does not come up as high in the back. In the front it extends almost all the way up to the waist/bottom of the belt buckle. In the rear it ends about (ahem) mid-butt.

Q: can these be hand washed?

No. These are disposable only. If you accidently put them in your washing machine, it will take forever to get these tiny beads out of any clothes you may have washed with them in your machine. They should not be hand washed either.
