Q: Is the remote ir or rf?

The iView converter box use Infrared remote control with propriety code to avoid the conflict with other TV, DVD and Audio system.

Q: Will this capture digital OTA signal and tr?ansmit to my smart digital tv (tuner not working)

The iView converter box can receive and convert the OTA digital TV signal which you can use the HDMI cable to your smart TV.

Q: It says new firmware. Whar version is it?

Yeah that is what it says, weird needed to update with USB memory. Weird part is unit info screen showed current version but when I updated with same "version" a lot of the issues cleared up. Make sure you get right update for your hardware version of will lose sound, easy to correct just use the other update.

Q: What type of usb drive do I need to purchase?

Any USB drive, I used a 256 MB USB 3.0 as was best value and can use for other things. Make sure get smallest size (not capacity bigger better) as possible as a standard stick will protrude the length from the connector. Makes access to on box controls awkward easy to knock. Not all that impressed with recording on this device not sure if it is the chipset & firmware, instructions / controls, or me. Have not been able to scan on timed recordings or pause and scan in real time. Bought for older CRT TV that seldom use except to watch OTA sports in real time, works great for that, good picture and lots of connection options. Basic controls are cluggy, not sure how you figure out if there are better options to purchase.
