Potentially life changing
I’m about 50 pages in and it’s absolute gold. If you’re thinking it might be relevant to you, buy it. It’s taking an age to read as nearly every sentence is thought provoking and I’m reflecting a lot as I go through it.It’s already completely reframed how I think about why I am the way I am, and the experiences I had as a child. It has the potential to be life changing for me. No other self help book has struck a chord in anywhere near the same degree as this.

The BEST self-help book
I first read this amazing book in 2006. It transformed my understanding of myself. It is a book that everyone should read, full of practical exercises to transform yourself.

Compulsory reading
The first half of this book gave me the chills - in a good way. Completely eye-opening. I've read a lot of psychoanalytic books and self-help journals in the past, but here was a condensed and finalised version of all that. It really got me thinking and reflecting on my life and added clarity where there was only vague fuzziness before. I even stopped dating for a while as it really shocked me into changing and considering my motives in life.I was so excited I wanted to go out and preach it. (I didn't because that is not cool). Although I did then order a 2nd copy to give to a friend. (Not sure if that was well received or even read). I believe someone wise advised helping people who didn't ask for help.I was then looking forward to reading Part Two - 'How to fix it'. Ah... mmm... it all got a bit too 12-step programme and 'higher power' for my liking. That's not to say the suggestions aren't valid, and Bradshaw makes pains to point out that Higher Power can mean anything personal to you, but it jarred with me.But wow! - the first half. I would go as far to say this should be made compulsory reading.

This book is excellent, from the very first page i felt for the first time in my life someone understood how i felt.It can be a little hard to understand at times but that is because it is not a basic book and it deals with very deep seated problems not surface issues. I felt astounded that some individuals can only give it 1 or 2 stars. They clearly have never felt as the book describes. hence the very negative remarks and have only simple issues, they should be reading something that deals with only emotional problems and they probably would get more benefit from reading books on CBT. This book is for people who need more than CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy), people whose issues are deeper and are more life controlling. This book was the book that started me on the road to healing myself and i am so grateful that i happened to stumble upon it, it was serendipitous. If you only have simple emotional issues and are able to use CBT to help you then this book is most definitely not for you as the book is for issues deeper than that. However if you feel the binding shame that seems to control your life then this book is for you and i cannot recommend it highly enough
