Q: Would it work with deterring mice?

Probably, we put it on the peanut feeder to keep the squirrel off and when the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker got on it it spun and threw him off, it's not supposed to throw the birds off, and they are not that heavy, give it a go. You could grease the pole on the feeder too, use petroleum jelly, also on Amazon, anywhere from ground level upwards, that works with squirrels too.

Q: What type of batteries does it take?

Hi, It takes 3 C size LR14 batteries, If you have greater spotted woodpeckers on your feeders they won't be able to use the feeder, we have them and the first time it landed on the peanut feeder it spun and shook him off, however, the squirrel never tried it. I think he saw what happened and decided to avoid it. Hope this helps. Also mix chilli powder with the seed and nuts, bird's can't taste it, but the squirrel's hate it.

Q: does this actually work

My squirrel sussed it out in no time. He managed to deactivate it. Never underestimate the intelligence of squirrels -they are expert problem solvers. It's now obsolete. Although I think it might work on a pole rather than the branch of a tree.
