ACADEMY MIG-23S Flogger B Model Kit (Model: 1621)

The Academy kit of the Mig-23 shows its age, but is a very "build-able" and straightforward. I've built one of these before. I was deciding if I should spend $25 + shipping on the Art Model (Ukraine) Mig-23UB trainer. I decided to go with this at half the price and get some aftermarket PE. The cockpit is sparse, but not much can be seen if you opt for closed canopy. The weapons are a bit rough, but I have the Hasegawa Soviet air-to-air set, so I'm good. Other reviews state that this kit doesn't scale out properly, and the nose is all wrong, but at arms length it looks like a Flogger-B - rivet counters may opt for for the Italeri MLD or the Art Model kit. I'm building this out in a Hungarian AF 4-tone scheme which is very handsome. Recommended.

Very simple and fun model kit to build.

This is certainly not the most accurate Flogger model out there but it practically falls together with very little cleanup needed. The parts are crisp and the panel lines are recessed and crisp. The missiles look inaccurate but if that really bothers you for $7 you can buy a replacement Soviet weapons set with missiles. Normally this jet carried R-23 medium range missiles (similar to Sparrow), K-13 missiles (Soviet copy of the Sidewinder) and R-60 missiles.Also, you can buy a replacement KM-1 ejection seat in 1/72 to replace the very basic seat in the model.It looks very impressive when built and airbrushed. How do I know? Because I built it 25 years ago. Now as a 43 year old guy I will build it again because of the nostalgia of my younger years. Strongly recommended.

Lots of potential for the persistent, patient crowd.The model includes recessed panel lines, excellent detailing throughout. The weak point is the cockpit, which has a open or closed canopy option, which naturally invites inspection. If you pose it open there is a fairly big hole there. Hence I posed it closed. Wings will sweep freely. Exhaust nozzle is a little simple on the inside. Truly though, this is a wonderful example of the MiG-23s in this scale, I enjoyed building it and really enjoy the finished product.

Sprue Brothers Models knows how to ship a plastic model kit. There are many who do not know how. This is an Academy made kit. The quality of the polystyrene is very good. The number of parts is less than 100. It should be very easy build. I do however give the instructions a C-. If you have 50 or so kits built you should not have a problem. This should not be a first model kit.
