It's good - as long as you're looking for the white bentonite-treated variety. If you want the oiled version for packing into joints, make sure you get brown oakum instead.

The package states that it will expand to 10x its volume? Hardly!
I bought this to seal around the sewer pipe connection in my basement. As a test, I put a small piece in water to see how much it would expand when wet. I don't think it even expanded by 50%, it at all! Maybe this stuff used to be the way to seal such things, but I think there are better ways now. I ended up using toilet wax seal wax wrapped with duct tape; worked perfectly!

but it works fine. I'm quite pleased
I wanted this for my BOB, fire making kit. It needed to be rinsed in hot water and dryed, but it works fine. I'm quite pleased.

Not what I remember
My Dad used oakum on his boat and as a kid we would help him but this stuff is not what I remember using and it does not seem to work as well.

It's a retroworld when your house is 110 years old. Why let the Millennials use a whole tube of caulk when oakum can serve as a stay-in-place form.
