Q: Is the strap leather or is it just a ribbon?

It is not leather. It is a very strong woven "ribbon". The retractable thread on mine gave out too quickly.

I attach my keys to this, I can tell you that it holds up really well. It can carry quite a bit of weight.

i'm not sure what you mean by a prox, but my train pass fits, as does the access badge to my office. there is the front slot with the window, and slots for two more cards on the back, held in by a strap that snaps over the cards.
